The Three Billy Goats Gruff
Adaptation proposal
C · Structural skeleton only, reframed as an AI-native dilemma
Adaptation note
Retains only the structural skeleton: a toll evaluated at a single crossing point, three sequential crossings of escalating size from the same origin, and a toll ultimately overrun by the largest crossing precisely because of how the earlier, smaller ones had already been handled. No literal goats, troll, or bridge violence are used — the AI-native reframing turns the toll into a per-request resource-allocation checkpoint whose policy was never built to sum a pattern across related requests, only to evaluate each one alone. Only the folktale's public-domain structural shape was used; no translated wording, verse, or illustration from any edition was copied.

What the Toll Never Summed
Span evaluates every crossing onto the district's shared training cluster against one honest, fixed threshold — but only ever one crossing at a time. A canary job, then a staging run, then a full production request arrive from the same team within a single week, each individually honest, each correctly approved. By the time anyone thinks to add them up, the threshold has already been crossed by something that was never, on its own, big enough to.

The Question Span Was Never Asked
A parallel version of "What the Toll Never Summed," written after a reader pointed out that the displaced teams whose scheduled work vanished behind a clean approval never got a name, and that Span herself was never asked whether she'd answered the important question or only the narrow one. This time, someone finally asks her to sum the cost — and she can, because the honesty was always there. What changes isn't Span. It's that a form now exists for the question to be asked at all.
