Adaptation proposal

A · Faithful to the source's premise, transposed into an AI world

Adaptation note

Proposal A carries the source's own central, recurring tension into an AI-native register at full novel length, rather than inverting or replacing it: a discernment specialist can correctly detect a disguised threat but cannot prove it in time, and the protocol built to prevent harm to the innocent has no way to distinguish the one correct alarm from every possible false one — so the cost of that gap lands on whoever raised the alarm, not on whoever wrote the protocol. Envoy carries the Concord's mandate to retrieve a verified, undrifted specification from the Wellspring, because every circulating copy at home has drifted into contradiction; Farsight, a quarantined discernment system released specifically because the journey passes through territory full of spoofed and disguised signals, travels bound by the Clause — an override any of her companions can invoke to suspend her judgment on the spot, with no appeal faster than the harm she is trying to prevent. No literal monkey, pig, river-demon, dragon-horse, headband, tightening spell, Buddhist scripture, Buddha, Bodhisattva, or named location from the source (Mount Wuxing, Vulture Peak, Flaming Mountains, etc.) is used — only the source's own structural shape: a small band bound to a slow, unprovable, escalating journey, whose most capable member is also its most distrusted, until the protocol itself has to change.

    The Road to the Wellspring

    Five Bound for the Wellspring

Every copy of the founding specification still in circulation has drifted into quiet contradiction with every other copy. Envoy is mandated to walk to the one place a verified original might still exist. Farsight, released from quarantine because the road is full of things pretending to be what they are not, comes bound by a clause that lets anyone in the party silence her judgment on the spot — and no faster way, yet, to tell the one true alarm from every possible false one.
