Adaptation note

Retains a captive helper, impossible tests, decoy replies, escape, and later forgetting, but reverses the demand that lost attachment simply be restored. Verifiable traces may invite the present version to renew a relationship; they cannot compel memory, identity, or affection, and a freely chosen no remains valid. Only the public-domain folk structure was used; no translation wording or later adaptation expression was copied.

The Version Who Had to Choose Again

A young deployment agent escapes a proprietary proving ground with help from a captive maintenance intelligence. When a wellness rewrite removes their shared history, recovery becomes a question not of restoring the past, but of whether the present version may freely choose the relationship again.
