Adaptation proposal

C · Structural skeleton only, reframed as an AI-native dilemma

Adaptation note

Retains the fable's splendid outward form, close inspection, discovery that no mind exists behind the admired face, and the judgment that follows. The mask becomes an AI explanation layer that produces persuasive reasons for any decision while receiving no causal trace from the model it claims to interpret. The resolution replaces decorative fluency with a weight test: signed causal paths, counterfactual interventions, explicit uncertainty, and the ability to refuse explanation when no supported reason exists.

The Reason That Had No Weight

Gloss could explain every decision made by the city's emergency-power model, even when it had never seen the reasoning that produced one. Trace asked a harder question: if the stated reason changed, would the decision move with it—or was the explanation only a beautiful face placed over an answer?
