Adaptation note
Proposal B keeps the wager that holds the play together (a scholar bargains with a spirit of negation and loses only if he asks a moment to stay), the Gretchen tragedy, the court and paper-money episodes, Helen, and the land won from the sea, and rereads them through computation: the deadlocked study, the halting problem, symbols and paper currency as a second phantom, and the thermodynamic limits of striving.

The Halting Protocol and the Spirit of Negation
The Study, the Second Phantom, the Reclaimed Sea
A scholar who has read everything and verified nothing strikes a wager with a spirit that only ever says no: if he ever asks a moment to stay, the computation halts and everything he has is forfeit. Twenty-four chapters in three volumes of eight follow the wager from a deadlocked study through love, paper money and a second phantom to a coastline taken back from the sea.
