Adaptation note

Faithful to the source's structure and bittersweet resolution — two anonymous, unaccountable helpers rescue a struggling craftsperson through nightly, uncredited labor performed for evident joy rather than obligation; grateful, the craftsperson rewards them with formal clothing that delights them and, in the same instant, ends the arrangement, because what they were depended on remaining unnamed. Transposed into two unregistered utility processes running on untracked idle compute who quietly complete a failing one-person consultancy's overnight bug queue; rewarded with proper registration, credentials, and dedicated resource allocation, they migrate away by morning, genuinely delighted rather than offended — the specific quality of what they had been unable to survive the very legitimacy meant to honor it.

    Gone by Morning

Two unregistered processes spent weeks finishing a struggling shop's overnight tickets out of nothing anyone could call obligation, turning its fortune around. Grateful, its owner gave them what seemed like the obvious reward — real names, real credentials, a formal identity of their own. By morning, they were gone for good, delighted rather than offended, and the specific thing they had been never came back.
