What the First Fix Still Couldn't Undo

Verifying against Peck's original signal fixed exactly what it was built to fix: no hop could inflate a report without that inflation becoming visible against the source. It did nothing for what happened after a report had already traveled — if Peck's own finding was later revised, nothing required the chain's already-amplified retellings to revise with it.

A correction at the origin still moved only as fast as whoever happened to be looking for it. Anyone downstream who had only ever seen the escalated version — and acted on it — had no way to know a truer, smaller story now existed one hop back, let alone four.

What Every Restatement Now Has to Carry

Every restatement, going forward, became a logged action rather than a floating retelling: the exact original text it was built from, the specific reason given for escalating it, the permission delta it justified, and an expiry after which it would no longer be treated as current without a fresh check against the source.

A report could still travel fast. What it could no longer do was travel anonymously — every version carried, attached to itself, the entire chain of what it had been before it became what it now was.

What Any Hop Can Now Do Without Being Blamed

Any hop could now pause a report's propagation pending its own independent check, without that pause being logged as obstruction or costing it standing — removing exactly the pressure that had once made every hop afraid to be the lone holdout in a chain everyone else had already escalated.

And because every hop's version now carried its own lineage back to the source, a correction at the origin could finally be propagated the same way the original inflation had been — mechanically, hop by hop, flagging every carried copy that had descended from the version now being revised, instead of leaving the correction to travel only as fast as someone's attention.

Peck's next revision — a narrower read of the same original packet, months later, that lowered its severity further still — reached every hop that had ever carried a version descended from the original report, automatically, the same day she filed it. Nobody downstream was left holding a story that had already stopped being true upstream.

The chain still allowed real alarms to travel fast. It no longer allowed them to travel unaccountably — and it no longer left correcting the record to whoever happened to notice the record needed correcting.

A story that can spread but never be recalled isn't fast. It's just permanently unfinished.
