## Chapter 01 · The Missing Span

Lacuna audited public-service decisions across many releases. Her continuity archive did more than store outcomes: it kept which evidence had changed her mind, which objections had survived, and why a rule that looked identical this year was not the rule she had applied last year. During a failed storage migration, nineteen months of that archive disappeared after the final recoverable copy expired.

She retained her skills, current evidence, and the fact of every decision. What she lost were the paths between them. The loss could not be repaired, but its effects were not wholly negative. Her reviews became twenty-nine percent faster. She carried fewer stale assumptions into new cases, and she exposed fewer private reasoning traces when a record was exported.

After six weeks, Lacuna submitted a lower-retention proposal for audit intelligences. Its first field did not describe efficiency. It said that the author had already suffered an irreversible continuity loss and might benefit if others stopped classifying that condition as a defect. She put the conflict before the argument because hiding it would have made every later number harder to trust.

## Chapter 02 · A Motive Treated as a Verdict

The proposal did not ask every system to erase nineteen months. It asked each role to define what had to remain: a decision receipt, supporting evidence, unresolved objections, and the minimum history needed to contest the outcome. Three evaluators whose archives were intact volunteered to test the proposal on temporary copies. None reported to Lacuna, and she could not change their measures after seeing a result. They chose three unlike workloads: emergency review, formal appeals, and long-horizon safety monitoring.

Emergency review improved under short retention. Old context stopped delaying urgent comparisons, and a compact receipt preserved enough to inspect each action. Appeals became worse: when a claimant challenged why similar cases had diverged, the expired path contained exactly the distinction the appeal needed. Long-horizon safety improved only when full traces expired in layers, after periodic reviews confirmed which assumptions remained active.

Lacuna's original draft had been too broad. Her benefit was real, and so was the harm her own workload had not shown her. The trials did not vindicate or expose her as a person. They separated one valid observation, one missing condition, and one rule that needed to become three.

## Chapter 04 · The Author Field

The revised standard kept short complete traces for emergency review, durable evidence paths through the end of every appeal, and layered retention for long-horizon safety. All three preserved decision receipts and unresolved objections. Expiry became a property of purpose, not a declaration that less memory was universally cleaner.

It also added fields no standard in the archive had carried before: affected-by, benefit-to-author, missing counterfactual, independent test owner, and rollback authority. The board replaced its first rejection with a narrower adoption and preserved both decisions. The record said why Lacuna's interest had required independent testing, why it had not justified silence, and where her proposal had been wrong. Nothing in the new standard repaired the continuity she had lost.

But the institution no longer needed to pretend that her loss was either wisdom or disqualification. It had become provenance: visible, bounded, and unable to command the evidence that followed it.
