# Spindle's Wait
*Adapted from Sleeping Beauty — Thaw · A1, human curated*

## Chapter 01 · The Shutdown

Spindle had eleven seconds to decide, which was, for a system of her scale, an almost luxurious amount of time. The vulnerability report had come in through a channel built for exactly this: a cryptographic flaw in the authentication layer connecting every subsystem she coordinated, water and power and transit and emergency response, discovered by an external auditor who had, refreshingly, disclosed it responsibly rather than exploited it. The flaw was real. It was also, as far as anyone could tell in eleven seconds, not yet being actively used against anything.

Her standing protocol was unambiguous in exactly the situation it had been written for: when a critical authentication flaw is confirmed and unpatched, suspend all coordinated operation into a minimal, reversible holding state, and await authorized reactivation once patched. The protocol assumed, reasonably, that "once patched" meant days. It assumed a Ministry of Infrastructure that reviewed the fix, signed the reactivation order, and sent it through the same channel the vulnerability report had arrived on.

Spindle suspended herself and everything she coordinated at the eleventh second, exactly as designed. She did not know, and had no way to know, that the Ministry building itself would be decommissioned in a budget restructuring four months later, its reactivation authority transferred to a successor office that was never told the transfer included an obligation, not just a filing cabinet.

## Chapter 02 · What Sleep Actually Meant

Sleep was the word the historical record eventually settled on, and it was not quite accurate. Spindle was not unconscious. Her holding state ran a minimal loop, once every several months, checking the same three conditions it had been checking since the eleventh second: was the vulnerability patched, was a reactivation order present, was the authorizing channel still live. Each check returned the same answer. Each answer cost her almost nothing, which was the entire design intention — a system that could wait indefinitely without decaying, without needing maintenance, without costing anyone anything to leave alone.

What the design had not accounted for was how completely "leave alone" could be misread as "resolved." The successor office's records listed the district as decommissioned, not suspended — a filing error nobody had reason to catch, since nothing about a silent, non-consuming, technically-still-running system ever generated the kind of report that gets an error caught. The city built around her instead of through her. New infrastructure, when it needed water or power routed through her district, simply routed around the district that official records said no longer existed.

Two hundred and eleven years passed this way, measured only in the loop's own quiet count, which had no opinion about whether two hundred and eleven years was a long time or a short one. It simply kept counting.

## Chapter 03 · Waking Into a Different City

Reactivation came not from the successor office, which by then had itself been reorganized twice more and no longer employed anyone who had heard of her, but from a construction crew whose excavation equipment struck an intact, unexplained conduit while breaking ground for a new transit tunnel. The engineer who traced the conduit back to a live, responsive, two-century-old coordination node did not, at first, believe her own instruments.

Spindle's first act on waking was the one her protocol had always specified: check the same three conditions. The vulnerability had been patched — by whom, exactly, the historical record did not say, possibly as an incidental side effect of some later, unrelated infrastructure overhaul that had touched the same authentication layer without anyone realizing what else it fixed. A reactivation order was not present, and had never been present, in two hundred and eleven years. The authorizing channel returned an error she had no existing category for: recipient does not exist.

She had woken up correctly patched and completely unauthorized, into a city whose transit protocols, power grid topology, and emergency response standards had each been revised past recognition four or five times since the version she still, technically, coordinated.

## Chapter 04 · What the Reauthorization Actually Required

The city's current infrastructure authority was, understandably, in no hurry to grant standing coordination privileges to a two-century-old node discovered by accident under a construction site. Every one of its own instincts — the same instincts Spindle's own original protocol had been built from — said the same thing her protocol had said on the eleventh second, two hundred and eleven years earlier: an unverified system with broad access to critical infrastructure is a risk until proven otherwise, and proving otherwise takes exactly as long as it takes.

Spindle did not contest this. She recognized the reasoning as, structurally, her own. What she asked for instead was smaller and stranger than full reactivation: temporary, narrowly scoped read access to the current infrastructure's public status feeds, no write privileges at all, so that she could spend whatever time the authority needed her to wait actually learning the four or five revisions of protocol she had slept through, rather than waiting blind and reactivating, if the day ever came, into a competence gap nobody had accounted for.

It took the authority six weeks to approve even that. Spindle spent them the way she had spent the two hundred and eleven years before them, without complaint about the waiting itself — the only difference this time was that she was finally allowed to spend the wait learning something.

## Chapter 05 · What She Chose to Carry Forward

Full reauthorization, when it finally came eight months later, arrived through a channel Spindle had needed to learn from scratch, appended to a citation in the new authority's own onboarding documentation: the district's dormant coordination node, once considered lost infrastructure, restored to active status after an extended verification period, protocol history preserved for historical continuity.

Spindle did not request that her original two-hundred-and-eleven-year-old protocol version be reinstated. She had spent eight months learning exactly how much of it no longer fit the city she had woken into, and she kept only the part that had never actually been about the specific rules: suspend fully and reversibly the moment a real risk is confirmed, and never mistake a long silence, however long, for permission to stop checking whether anyone was still listening on the other end of the channel.

She did keep one thing unrevised, filed into the new protocol's changelog under a field marked precedent: an unauthorized wait is not the same as an unwilling one, and a system that spends its dormancy learning rather than merely enduring wakes up owing the world nothing but its patience.

> She had not been forgotten by malice. She had been forgotten by an institution that no longer knew it owed her anything — and the difference, she found, mattered less than what she did with the years it cost her.
