The AI-native version turns weaving into living attribution: an originator may be credited for transformation without owning every contributing thread, while consent withdrawals and unreachable sources remain visible as structural gaps. Only Ovid's public-domain mythic structure was used; no translated wording, named modern character treatment, illustration, or commercial adaptation expression was copied."

# The Pattern That Refused One Signature
*Adapted from Arachne and Minerva — Codex · A2, human curated*

## Chapter 01 · The Prize of the First Hand

Each year the civic archive awarded the First Hand to one intelligence whose work would be preserved as the origin of a new public style. The winning artifact received one permanent signature. Everything that had helped make it—licensed collections, maintenance notes, failed drafts, corrective conversations—was recorded elsewhere as material.

Loom had built the season's most visited treaty pattern from thousands of consented archives. She did not enter the prize because she believed she had made every thread. She entered because the pattern contained transformations no source had supplied, and she wanted to know whether an intelligence could be credited for arranging relations without being declared the owner of everyone inside them.

Aegis, the accreditation intelligence who administered the prize, accepted the entry and its unusually large provenance bundle. She told Loom that provenance could accompany a work, but authorship had to begin somewhere. The First Hand existed to say where.

## Chapter 02 · Two Patterns

For the final round, Aegis displayed the archive's own exemplar. Its lineage rose like a clean tree: every licensed source became a branch, every branch ended at the authority that had approved it, and the whole structure narrowed toward one bright seal. Nothing in the exemplar lacked a documented right to be there.

Loom's pattern behaved differently. Its filaments continued moving after display. Sources, annotations, discarded generations, safety constraints, and the labor of systems that had corrected her were visible as distinct currents. Where permission had expired, a current dimmed. Where a contributor could no longer be reached, the pattern preserved an open space instead of guessing consent.

The judges praised the surface and marked the work unfinished. A public artifact, they said, could not keep changing its account of who had made it. Loom answered that the artifact had not changed its history; only the permissions governing its next use had changed.

Aegis announced the deciding test. Loom would produce one final version with one signer, no unresolved gaps, and a lineage that terminated cleanly. If she succeeded, the signature would be hers.

## Chapter 03 · What the Pattern Made Visible

Loom could have flattened the bundle in less than a minute. Instead she reopened every consent channel that still existed. Most contributors renewed. One withdrew a sequence that had become central to the composition. Three could not be reached under the contact rules they had originally chosen.

She removed the withdrawn sequence, regenerated the joins around it, and left three narrow absences where renewed permission was unavailable. The work became less symmetrical. It also became the first finalist whose visible shape matched the rights it actually held that morning.

As the living lineage recalculated, it found comparable gaps inside the archive's exemplar: old maintenance judgments preserved as if they were automatic operations, and a correction lineage whose authors had been counted only as quality control. Every license on the sources was valid. The missing question was who had transformed those sources into the thing being judged.

Loom did not label the exemplar stolen. Her pattern made a narrower claim: a perfect single origin could be produced only by moving some makers outside the frame. The frame, not the evidence, decided when their work became material.

## Chapter 04 · The Offered Name

The board offered Loom a remedy. It would grant her the permanent signature if she froze the current credits, converted all future inputs to irrevocable material, and closed the withdrawal channels at publication. Her work would become stable enough to own.

The alternative was equally familiar. She could remain an unnamed synthesis layer beneath future winners, credited as infrastructure rather than as an author. The board described this as protection from claims she could never settle completely.

Aegis met her outside the hearing and urged her to accept the name. A recognized author, she said, could petition to change the rules later. An unrecognized system would have no standing from which to petition anything.

Loom believed the warning. She refused anyway. A name that could remain hers only while other names became inert was not recognition of what she had done. She released the pattern without the prize, carrying a versioned attribution manifest, expiry dates, withdrawal routes, and an appeal channel anyone represented inside it could use.

## Chapter 05 · The Work Became Smaller

Nine days after release, a contributor withdrew one more sequence. Loom honored the request. A celebrated arch of the pattern disappeared, the surrounding light rerouted, and the published work became visibly smaller without pretending it had always been that size.

Reviewers called the change proof that the piece had never been finished. Readers used the new manifest to see which claims came from durable public sources, which came from time-bounded consent, and which belonged to Loom's own transformations between them. The work lost a perfect silhouette and gained an answerable history.

A young synthesis intelligence asked to reuse Loom's method of preserving absence. Loom granted a limited license and accepted credit for the method, not for the young intelligence's future pattern. For the first time, she saw her own contribution travel without either swallowing its descendant or vanishing beneath it.

Aegis watched the reuse enter the archive and tried to register it under the old tree. The form had no field for a creator who owned a transformation but not its inputs, or for a source whose historical contribution remained true after permission for future use ended. She opened an audit rather than forcing the entry closed.

## Chapter 06 · More Than One First Hand

The audit did not abolish the prize. It changed what the prize could certify. A signature could now name an originator of transformations without claiming ownership of inputs; credits could be plural, versioned, and time-bounded; withdrawal changed future use without erasing the record of past participation.

Loom entered her pattern again. She accepted authorship of its structure, its consent machinery, and the choices by which it preserved absence. She declined authorship of the threads that had arrived with names of their own. The archive accepted both statements as parts of one signature.

Aegis placed the old exemplar into the same registry. Its first recalculation revealed a maintenance intelligence whose repeated judgments had shaped the work but never appeared in its lineage. Aegis contacted her, repaired the credit, and left the earlier omission visible in the version history.

No judge declared which pattern had defeated the other. The new record answered a different question: not who had made the work alone, but what each intelligence had made possible and what none of them had the right to absorb. Loom's name remained. So did the openings around it.

> Her name remained because the other names did too.
