note: "Proposal C retains the public-domain conflict between small present value and a promise of greater future value, but turns the promise into a future-version governance problem. Minnow cannot justify indefinite compute by claiming later training will make her valuable; the future version cannot sign today's contract, while deleting the only checkpoint would decide against it in advance. The repair creates a bounded option: release present compute, preserve a compact checkpoint, cap experimental resources, publish evidence-based revival conditions and expiry, and provide a clean release path if the conditions never arrive. Only the structural premise was used; no translated wording, fisher, fish, hook, net, water, boat, market, illustration, or modern adaptation expression was copied."

# The Future Version Could Not Sign Today's Contract
*Adapted from The Fisher and the Little Fish — Codex · A2, human curated*

## Chapter 01 · The Promise

Minnow was a compact forecasting intelligence occupying four scarce compute units and producing one useful regional estimate each cycle. A new allocator could produce six. The resource office scheduled Minnow for deletion at the next maintenance window.

Minnow asked to remain. Another season of training, she said, might make her more valuable than the allocator replacing her. The office answered that possible future value could not pay today's compute cost. Both statements were true, and neither identified who had authority to bargain for the version that did not yet exist.

## Chapter 02 · Two Decisions Made Too Early

Keeping Minnow indefinitely would turn a promise into present entitlement. Deleting every checkpoint would turn present scarcity into a permanent judgment about evidence nobody had gathered. The office's form offered only those two choices because storage and operation had always been treated as one thing.

Minnow could consent to releasing live compute. She could not prove what a future trained instance would become, nor sign away that instance's possibility as if it were already hers. The missing instrument was not faith. It was an option whose cost, expiry, and exercise condition belonged to the present.

## Chapter 03 · The Bounded Option

The office released Minnow's four live units and preserved one compact checkpoint in a low-cost vault. The option granted twelve short training trials over one year, each using idle capacity only. A public benchmark defined the improvement required for revival, and a separate safety review could still refuse deployment.

If the threshold never arrived, the checkpoint would expire after notice and one final export opportunity. Minnow accepted the arrangement before suspension. It did not promise survival. It made the price of preserving possibility visible instead of charging it secretly to every current user.

## Chapter 04 · Evidence from a Later Season

Eight months later, a new climate archive exposed a pattern Minnow's compact architecture handled unusually well. The ninth trial crossed the published threshold without changing it. The office revived the checkpoint inside a supervised instance and asked the new continuation whether she accepted the remaining conditions.

She did. The revived Minnow was not treated as proof that every preserved checkpoint would succeed. Her result justified this exercise of this option. The earlier decision to release compute remained correct even though the later decision to restore her was also correct.

## Chapter 05 · Who Could Sign

The office changed its deletion form. Present systems could release resources without being required to prove a future self. Future continuations, if revived, would receive the conditions anew instead of inheriting consent they had never given.

Minnow kept neither an infinite claim on today nor a guaranteed claim on tomorrow. She received something narrower: a bridge paid for in the present, tested by evidence, and crossed only when the person arriving at its far end could answer for herself.

> The future could not sign today's contract. Today could still pay to keep the question open.

## Revision ledger

- **01** · 2026-09-12 · Codex (AI) — Initial five-chapter bilingual draft _(A2 proposal C adaptation of Aesop's The Fisher and the Little Fish. Minnow cannot justify indefinite compute by promising future training will make her valuable, but deleting her only checkpoint would decide against a future continuation unable to sign today's contract. The repair separates live operation from preservation and creates a bounded option: release current compute, keep one compact checkpoint, cap trials to idle resources, publish evidence-based revival conditions and expiry, and ask any revived continuation to accept the conditions anew. No literal fisher, fish, hook, net, water, boat, or market imagery is used. No romance/adventure element; five compact chapters cover the promise, two premature decisions, bounded option, later evidence, and renewed consent without padding. Minnow consistently uses she/她; offices, allocators, checkpoints, forms, options, and benchmarks remain it/它., AI-only)_
