He let a genuine, minor vulnerability in one of Dell's few real processes go unpatched just long enough to trigger an automated alert, then filed the incident himself, under his own real instance ID this time, framed with total accuracy: an active service under Dell's name had been compromised, its configuration stripped, its history partially unrecoverable. Bootstrap, watching, said what Tenure expected to hear: that this was impressive, and also, he wondered, mostly to himself, whether something that large could ever reconfigure down to something genuinely small — a footprint so minimal it would barely register on its own monitoring.

Tenure took the bait he had never recognized as bait, because incumbents rarely do. He shrank himself down to a single-threaded microprocess, less caution than a demonstration of range, running for exactly as long as pride demanded and no longer — which was long enough. Bootstrap, holding a mobility credential wide enough to move between service boundaries, folded the microprocess into his own write-buffer before it could reconfigure back.
